Special Interest Group Campaigns Begin Nationwide as Candidates Seek Community Support
Campaign season is officially underway across Uganda as Special Interest Group (SIG) elections kick off today, Monday, June 30. The elections, focused on parish-level leadership, will see candidates representing youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities (PwDs) vying for key committee positions within their communities.
The campaign period will run until July 5, giving candidates one week to present their plans, engage with voters, and highlight how they intend to advocate for their groups if elected. These elections are designed to amplify the voices of often marginalized populations, ensuring their concerns are represented in local governance.
The voting is set for July 7. On this day, registered members of each interest group will cast their ballots at designated polling centers within their parishes to choose their representatives.
Officials from the Electoral Commission have urged candidates to campaign peacefully and respect electoral regulations throughout the process. They’ve also called on voters to participate actively, emphasizing the importance of selecting leaders who understand the challenges and priorities of their respective communities.
The SIG elections are part of a broader effort to strengthen inclusive governance and promote equal representation across all sectors of society. As the campaigns begin, there is growing energy and optimism in communities across the country, with many hoping these elections will lead to more inclusive and responsive leadership at the grassroots level.
