Voice For The Elderly!! Village Older Persons Committees Elections Kick Off Today

Today, Monday 16th June 2025, marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s democratic journey as elections for the Village Older Persons Committees officially begin. This is the first poll under the 2025–2026 General Elections Roadmap and holds special meaning for the nation’s senior citizens.

The election is exclusively for Ugandans aged 60 and above. To participate, one must be listed on both the National Voters Register and the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Register in their respective villages. These committees are critical in championing the rights, welfare, and concerns of older persons at the grassroots level.

For many elders, this is more than a civic duty—it’s an opportunity to shape the leadership that speaks directly to their needs. As voting unfolds across villages today, fellow citizens are encouraged to support their elders in engaging with this democratic process.

The Electoral Commission, in coordination with local authorities, has prioritized a smooth, secure, and accessible voting experience. Every effort is being made to ensure transparency and inclusivity, so that all eligible seniors can vote without difficulty.

This election is a powerful reminder that democracy is for everyone, regardless of age. By enabling older persons to choose their representatives, Uganda is acknowledging their wisdom, dignity, and indispensable role in community life.

As the first event in the broader electoral calendar, today’s vote sets the foundation for a fair, inclusive, and peaceful election season ahead.
