Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away from severe burn injuries following a violent attack by her alleged boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, in Eldoret, Kenya. The incident occurred yesterday evening when Marangach set Cheptegei on fire during a confrontation, causing her to sustain 80% burn injuries. Despite receiving medical care at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, her condition deteriorated, leading to organ failure and her eventual death.
The attack took place after Marangach, armed with a jerrican of petrol, confronted Cheptegei at her residence. Cheptegei had returned home from church with her children when Marangach, in a fit of rage, poured petrol on her and ignited it. Neighbors intervened and rushed both Cheptegei and Marangach, who also suffered burn injuries, to the hospital. Marangach remains in critical condition.
The motive behind the attack is believed to be related to ongoing disputes over property in Endebes, Trans Nzoia. Rebecca’s father, Mzee Joseph Cheptegei, expressed his deep sorrow and confusion over the senseless violence. The incident has sent shockwaves through the global athletics community, mourning the loss of a celebrated athlete whose contributions to long-distance running had earned her international acclaim.
