Justice Byabakama Urges Police to Protect Rights During Elections

In an important step toward free, fair, and peaceful elections, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, delivered a powerful keynote address on the importance of human rights in election policing. This happened yesterday during a Workshop Seminar for Unit Commanders of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, held at the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru.

The main focus of the seminar was Human Rights-Based Policing of Elections. Justice Byabakama reminded police commanders that their role in the electoral process goes far beyond just maintaining law and order. He emphasized that the police are key partners in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and credibility of elections. Most importantly, they are responsible for protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens, especially during the sensitive election period.

The Electoral Commission believes that when the police act professionally and with respect for human rights, it builds public trust and encourages more people to take part in elections without fear or intimidation.

The Uganda Police Force, represented by @PoliceUg, plays a vital role throughout the electoral cycle—from voter registration and campaigns to polling day and the declaration of results. Justice Byabakama’s message was clear: the upcoming elections must be peaceful, lawful, and respectful of every Ugandan’s rights.

Workshops like these are important to prepare the security forces to handle election-related duties in a manner that is both effective and respectful of democracy. As Uganda prepares for the next elections, this training shows a commitment to keeping the process fair and peaceful for everyone.
