Uganda Police Tasked to Ensure Violence-Free 2025/2026 Elections

As the country prepares for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Government of Uganda has directed the Uganda Police Force to implement robust and proactive measures aimed at ensuring a peaceful and violence-free electoral process.

This directive underscores the Government’s commitment to safeguarding democracy, public safety, and the integrity of the electoral process. The move was revealed during the #GCICMediaReview under the #OpenGovUg initiative, which promotes transparency and accountability in governance.

Officials emphasized that past elections have highlighted the need for stronger preventive strategies against election-related violence, including political clashes, voter intimidation, and disruption of campaign activities. The Uganda Police Force is now expected to intensify community policing, enhance rapid response capabilities, and work closely with stakeholders including political parties, civil society, and local leaders.

“The goal is not just to react to violence but to prevent it entirely. Peaceful elections are a shared responsibility, and the police will work hand in hand with citizens to uphold law and order,” a government spokesperson said.

Ugandans are being encouraged to report any suspicious or violent activity and to participate in the electoral process peacefully. The Government has reiterated its stance that no form of violence will be tolerated and that perpetrators will face the full force of the law.

As political activities ramp up across the country, all eyes are now on law enforcement to deliver on this mandate and help create a secure environment where every Ugandan can freely exercise their right to vote.
