Rwanda Assures Tourists of Safety Amid Marburg Outbreak, Highlights Stringent Health Measures

As the Marburg virus outbreak spreads in Rwanda, government officials are assuring international tourists that the country remains a safe destination, even as the number of confirmed cases rises. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has emphasized that while public health remains the highest priority, tourism activities continue unaffected.

The outbreak, which was first confirmed on September 27, 2024, by the Rwandan Ministry of Health, has led to 38 confirmed cases and 11 deaths as of October 3. Despite the concerning numbers, RDB has reassured the public and travelers that Marburg, a highly infectious virus, poses minimal risk to tourists due to the nature of its transmission.

In an official statement, the RDB highlighted that unlike airborne diseases, Marburg spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, reducing the potential for widespread transmission in tourist areas. “Tourism remains safe in Rwanda, with the health and safety of visitors being a top priority. Visitors can travel with confidence, knowing that all necessary actions are being taken to prevent the spread of Marburg,” the statement read.

Rwanda, known for its mountain gorillas, stunning landscapes, and national parks, places a heavy emphasis on tourism as a cornerstone of its economy. The sector is a significant contributor to the nation’s GDP and supports thousands of jobs, from hospitality workers to local guides. The assurance from RDB seeks to protect this vital industry while also addressing concerns raised by the international community regarding safety during the outbreak.

The board also detailed the measures in place to safeguard tourists, including enhanced hygiene protocols, temperature checks, and the widespread availability of sanitizing stations. Service providers in the tourism industry have been trained to follow strict health guidelines, ensuring that hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions adhere to international safety standards.

Rwanda’s response to the Marburg virus has garnered praise for its transparency and proactive measures. While other nations have often imposed travel restrictions during outbreaks of contagious diseases, Rwanda’s approach remains focused on prevention and public education. Officials have made it clear that no travel restrictions are currently in place, and they are closely monitoring the situation to ensure it remains under control.

“We are working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Health to contain this outbreak,” RDB noted, “and tourists can rest assured that every precaution is being taken.”

Tourists have responded with mixed reactions. Some, reassured by the government’s measures, have continued with their travel plans, while others remain cautious. Local tour operators have also seen a slight dip in bookings but remain optimistic about future prospects, citing Rwanda’s strong health infrastructure and the government’s commitment to tourism.
