In a dynamic discussion on NBS TV this morning, Sir Simon Muyanga Lutaya and Liznile Naherya of DEBU & FI INITIATIVE shed light on their ongoing efforts to support entrepreneurs in the informal sector. Their widely recognized business talk shows, which have been successfully held in various locations, are now set to reach Masaka from September 23 to 27.

Lutaya, who transitioned from journalism to fish farming and faced substantial losses in 2020, shared his motivation behind the initiative. “My personal experience underscored the need for comprehensive business education. Many start businesses without fully understanding the challenges involved,” Lutaya explained. This led him to collaborate with DEBU & FI INITIATIVE to create a platform for practical business education and support.

The talk shows, also known as “barazas,” are designed to address the real-life challenges faced by market sector players. These events have previously been held in various locations, including marketplaces and taxi parks, where attendees can discuss their issues and receive guidance from experts. “The barazas provide an invaluable opportunity for entrepreneurs to voice their concerns and get practical solutions,” Naherya said.

Despite their success, the initiative faces significant challenges, particularly in mobilizing participants. “One of our main obstacles is ensuring attendance without offering financial incentives,” Naherya admitted. Lutaya echoed this sentiment, noting that some attendees expect allowances, complicating the mobilization process.

The upcoming Masaka Edition represents a key expansion of their efforts. Lutaya and Naherya are calling on various organizations and government entities to support this initiative, emphasizing the benefits of free, accessible business knowledge. “We encourage different organizations and government bodies to join us in this crucial effort,” Lutaya urged.

Looking to the future, DEBU & FI INITIATIVE plans to broaden the impact of their business talk shows. The team aims to develop a television series and integrate the program into schools, including high schools and universities, to provide early mentorship for students. “Our goal is to extend these talks to educational institutions, helping students prepare for the business world before they graduate,” Lutaya revealed.

As DEBU & FI INITIATIVE prepares for the Masaka Edition, their continued commitment to empowering entrepreneurs through practical education remains evident.
