By Teddy Namayanja
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has demanded that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni visits Kiteezi Land Fill, to ascertain the magnitude of the Saturday tragedy that has so far claimed 36 lives and left hundreds homeless.
He made the demand Friday morning at City Hall, while addressing Journalists about the proposals made by KCCA executive in regard to ressolving the uncertainties surrounding the Kiteezi Land Fill tragedy.
“Before cabinet sits on Monday next week, let President Museveni visit Kiteezi. It’s coming to a week now since the disaster happened and he has not even bothered to go there. It’s not like he’s not in the country nor too busy to do this. Some of these things should be taken seriously by the President, lives were lost and people were left homeless. There’s no excuse as to why he hasn’t been there”. Lukwago noted.
He also demanded that the President issues an official statement over the tragedy immediately.
“This is not a matter of social media conversations with Bazukkulu. This is a serious matter that requires him to issue an official statement. What the media published was not the official statement but rather his casual chat with bazzukulu on his social media platforms. It is very disturbing that he took that matter so lightly. I therefore demand that he comes out and issue an official statement immediately”. Lukwago said.
Lukwago expressed fears that if government doesn’t address issues surrounding garbage disposal and drainage channels in Kampala, worse disasters are going to happen according to experts.
“Kampala is a one huge dead trap and the earlier we wake up, the better. When you look at the drainage systems, garbage collection and disposal in all these markets and buildings around the city, even the mortuaries, Kampala will burry all of us”. He said.
He attributed these disasters to poor planning and allocation of resources, and high levels of corruption in the country.
According to the Uganda Police Force, One more body was retrieved yesterday bringing the total number of deaths toand 36.
