Ndayishimiye of Burundi appointed to lead the East African Community

During the 22nd Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State held in Arusha on Friday, July 22, 2022, President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi was appointed to head the East African Community (EAC).
President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya will step down in favor of Ndayishimiye following taking office in March 2021.
At the close of the two-day conference held in Arusha, Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced him as the new chairman of the EAC.

President Ndayishimiye thanked his fellow Heads of State for their cooperation in an address shortly after becoming elected and promised to promote the bloc’s objectives.
He pledged to make sure that women and young people have chances within the bloc while also boosting the use of Kiswahili.
President Ndayishimiye promised to strengthen the EAC common market while also speeding the steps necessary for Somalia to officially join the organization.
President Kenyatta, the outgoing EAC chairman, thanked the EAC Heads of State, the East African Council of Ministers, and the community secretariat for their support.
He stated that the East African Community had achieved remarkable achievement and carried out many noble deeds.

Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Evarist Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, and Yoweri of Uganda were the four presidents present. South Sudan, Rwanda, and the DRC all sent representatives.
Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are all members of the EAC, a regional intergovernmental organization.
The EAC’s treaty, which founded the community, serves as the basis for all of its operations. It was signed in November 1999, and after it was ratified, it went into effect in July 2000.
