I’m Going In A Convoy- FDC’s Amuriat Vows to Defy EC’s Guidelines On Presidential Nominations

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer Patrick Amuriat Oboi has vowed not to abide by Electoral Commission (EC)’s restriction on the number of people supposed to accompany an aspiring candidate to the nomination center for presidential nominations.

Last week, the EC issued a number of guidelines for nomination of presidential candidates scheduled for 2nd and 3rd November 2020 at Kyambogo University Sports Grounds.

According to the guidelines which were designed in accordance with COVID19 prevention measures, an aspiring candidate will be allowed into the nomination venue accompanied by not more than 10 persons (including the candidate). The Candidates were also advised to use three vehicles each with not more than four persons, the driver inclusive.

However, the FDC presidential flag bearer says this is an infringement on their rights and vowed to defy the directive on his nomination day.

While addressing the party’s weekly press conference at the FDC headquarters in Kampala today, Amuriat said if the government didn’t want them to exercise their rights during the election period, it should never have organized these elections.

“We don’t do our campaigns that way; we are going with our people. So anybody who thinks they are going to mount road blocks against our people, anybody who thinks they are going to stop our convoy should be well prepared for the FDC martial and the defiance that we are known for.” Said Amuriat

He added “If Museveni didn’t want us to have our freedoms, he should never have organized this election but now that he has organized it, we are going to be speaking to our people wherever we go in whatever way we feel we should speak to them while preserving their safety. We are going to these elections as we normally go for them while protecting our people”

Meanwhile the FDC say they will announce the date when their presidential flag bearer will be presented for nomination after they have received a certificate of verification of supporters forms from the EC.
