Kampala Floods Blamed on Garbage Dumped in Drainage Channels

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has blamed increased floods in the city on garbage dumped in drainage channels by city dwellers.

John Paul Sajjabi the KCCA Manager – Health and Safety says the practice blocks easy flow of water through the drainage channels hence causing the floods.

Sajjabi was speaking during a search for the body of Cissy Namukasa a 56 year old woman who fell in an open channel at Nakawa traffic lights on the 2nd of this month.

The KCCA drainage team has today been dredging and combing a section of Nakivubo channel as they teamed up with the family members of the deceased in the search.

The late Cissy Namukasa

Peter Ochieng the KCCA drainage technician says their search efforts are being frustrated by the current rains and encroachment along the channel reserve which makes it hard to access some sections.

He however says they have opted for manual methods in some of the sections where their machines cannot access.

Ochieng says the search for the body is still on until it’s recovered.

“We still have hopes of getting the body because we have got all the necessary equipment to aid us in the search ” Ochieng said

The CCTV footage showing the late Namukasa crying out for help before she was swept down the running waters went viral leading to public criticism on the management of city drainage system.

KCCA has since promised to compensate the family of the deceased.
