Global AIS Day: Uganda Civil Aviation Authority Leads Discussions on Aeronautical Information

May 15, 2024, marked a significant milestone in the aviation industry – Global Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Day! This day was established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council back in 1953 to recognize the vital role AIS plays in ensuring safe and efficient global air navigation.

To commemorate this day, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) hosted the 8th AIP Review workshop at the Horizon Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda. This event brought together over 100 participants from the aviation sector and various governmental departments to reflect on the enduring importance of AIS.

At the heart of AIS lies the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), a critical document that contains essential information for air navigation. This includes flight regulations, airport data, airspace details, and flight routes. The AIP is a fundamental resource for pilots, air traffic controllers, and aviation professionals worldwide.

The UCAA’s Aeronautical Information Management Department plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely flow of quality aeronautical information necessary for safe and efficient air navigation. Their services include:

• International NOTAM Office (NOF): responsible for promulgating NOTAM and facilitating international exchange.

• Cartography Unit: develops and maintains aeronautical maps and charts, conducts data verification surveys, and plans the establishment and maintenance of electronic terrain and obstacle databases.

By celebrating Global AIS Day, we acknowledge the significance of AIS in maintaining the highest standards of air navigation safety and efficiency.
