Businessman Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, has rolled out a major cleanup exercise along the lower section of the Nakivubo drainage channel, marking the first step toward long-awaited redevelopment works.
The operation, which deployed heavy machinery, trucks, and large crews, focused on clearing piles of waste, silt, and debris that have long clogged the channel — an area notorious for flooding, pollution, and poor sanitation. The cleanup signals the start of an ambitious project aimed at transforming one of Kampala’s most critical drainage systems.
Ham, who is also leading the redevelopment of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, emphasized that the project will not only upgrade the drainage network but also integrate commercial infrastructure to support urban renewal, flood control, and improved sanitation in the city center.
“This is more than just cleaning; it is about preparing the foundation for lasting development,” Ham said at the site. “We are working closely with the authorities to ensure this project delivers real value to both the people and the city.”
Planned works in the next phase include covering and modernizing the drainage channel, constructing service lanes, installing water filtration chambers, and potentially developing commercial spaces above the infrastructure. The goal is to restore both efficiency and aesthetics to one of Kampala’s vital urban arteries.
Photos and videos from the exercise showed dredging activities, large heaps of collected waste, and workers clearing the way for construction, setting the tone for a new chapter in Kampala’s urban redevelopment.
