The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has pushed its National council Meeting meant to elect the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2021 elections to Thursday 8th October 2020 .
The national council sitting had been planned to take place tomorrow Tuesday 6th October 2020.
However, the FDC deputy spokesperson John Kikonyogo says the council sitting has been pushed to Thursday 8th October to allow the two candidates namely Ambassador Wasswa Biriggwa and Eng Patrick Amuriat Oboi conclude their campaigns.
Addressing the party’s weekly press conference, Kikonyogo said the party working committee will sit tomorrow Tuesday to set the agenda for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that will be held on Wednesday prior to the national council sitting on Thursday.
“That national council meeting will also determine the tenure of office of all NEC members. As you know our period ended but it was extended because of COVID-19.” Said Kikonyogo
Meanwhile, the FDC has denied being engaged in talks with any opposition political party with an aim of fronting joint candidates for 2021 elections.
This follows circulating reports that FDC and Robert Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform (NUP) are in talks to have a single candidate in each of the elective positions including the presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.
According to the FDC party deputy spokesperson John Kikonyogo, much as they welcome unity talks, no party has officially approached them for such talks.
He said whoever is interested in such talks must communicate to the party through official channels.
“As FDC in principal we believe in unity talks, but nobody has officially written to us that we should engage in unity talks. So what you have been hearing some people telling you that they have been trying to engage FDC I may say that’s what they think should be done but it has not been officially communicated to us” He said
Kikonyogo added “As we talk today, we are still fielding candidates for various elective positions in the coming general elections as we are supposed to do constitutionallyand when time comes and someone wants to talk to us about fielding joint candidates at all levels we are ready to talk to them”
