Man Arrested For Theft Using Fake ATM Cards

A man who is alleged to have been fraudulently withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts after switching his fake ATM cards with his victims’ has been arrested in Entebbe.

The suspect has been identified as one Geofrey Wandera (39) a fisherman and resident of Abaita ababiri in Entebbe municipality.


According to Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Wandera was arrested on Monday 28/09/2020 by Stanbic bank security officers who handed him over to Entebbe police.


This after the suspect allegedly joined an old woman in an ATM enclosure and pretended to be helping her.


“In the process, he switched his fake ATM card with that of the victim. The ATM rejected the fake ATM card and the suspect having ‘helped’ in vain opted to walk away but the old woman was suspicious, she made an alarm and the suspect was arrested there and then” said Owoyesigyire


He added ” Upon searching the suspect, he was found in possession of seven ATM cards registered in different names of Sarah Nakawuka; centenary bank , Isabirye Sula; Equity bank, Nabadda Sarah; Tropical bank, Fred Mwesezi; pride micro finance and Bosco Bongomin; centenary bank. The other two credit cards had faded identities”

Some of the ATM cards recovered from the suspect.


Owoyesigyire advised people to at all times remain vigilant while at ATM points and not to seek for any help from strangers.


He called upon any one who lost a credit card and his or her name appears above to get intouch with Entebbe Police Station for follow up.

“Entebbe Police is also working with other police stations to find out whether they have preciously registered any cases against the same person” said Owoyesigyire.
