FULL REPORT!! NRM’s Mike Mukula Withdraws from Eastern Region Race Over Corruption Fears

Captain Mike Mukula, a senior NRM leader, has announced that he is withdrawing from the race for National Vice Chairman (Eastern Region), citing widespread corruption and voter bribery in the campaign process.
In a statement released on Monday, Mukula, who is the current Eastern Region Vice Chairman, said he had made the “difficult but principled decision” after careful thought. He argued that participating in a race tainted by bribery and excessive spending would be to “legitimize illegality” and support practices he does not believe in.
Mukula warned that these practices threaten the very values, spirit, and mission of the NRM. He said they “erode the moral fabric of our Movement” and could delegitimize the party’s internal democratic processes. His withdrawal is being seen as a stand against the commercialization of politics in Uganda’s ruling party.
The veteran politician, who also served as Soroti Municipality MP, emphasized that his decision is not a sign of weakness, but an act of conviction and political maturity. He called on NRM Chairman President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), and the party’s Electoral Commission to urgently address these issues and restore integrity to the party.
Mukula urged the NRM to reclaim its moral authority by fighting voter bribery, excessive campaign spending, and other practices that undermine trust. He said reforms are essential to safeguard internal democracy, restore confidence, and protect the party’s core values.
Despite stepping down, Mukula reaffirmed his loyalty to the NRM and President Museveni. He pledged to continue serving Uganda in any role he can, guided by patriotism, integrity, and service above self.
The NRM Electoral Commission has not yet responded to Mukula’s withdrawal or the allegations he raised. His exit is expected to change the dynamics of the Eastern Region race and has sparked discussions on social media about money, corruption, and integrity in Ugandan politics.
