There is a new storm in Uganda’s music and political world after musician Khalifa Aganaga boldly told off Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, asking him to stay out of music issues. According to Aganaga, Bobi Wine is now a politician and should stop commenting on what happens in the music industry.
Bobi Wine, who started as a successful musician before entering politics, has often criticized fellow artists who work with the government, especially those who receive support through the Uganda National Musicians Federation. To him, taking such money is the same as supporting President Museveni’s government, which he believes has failed Ugandans. He wants artists to speak out against injustice, as he has always done.
But Aganaga doesn’t agree. He says once Bobi Wine chose to become a politician and even ran for president, he left the music world behind. In Aganaga’s words: “Since you chose to be a politician, stop opening your mouth on music-related issues.” He believes Bobi Wine should now concentrate fully on his political career and leave music matters to those still actively involved in the industry.
This strong statement has sparked debate. Some people side with Aganaga, saying Bobi Wine should act like a national leader and not mix politics with music anymore. Others feel Bobi Wine still has a right to speak on music matters, especially since it is the foundation of his fame and influence.
Despite the disagreement, one thing is clear: Bobi Wine’s voice still has a big impact, both in politics and in entertainment. But with more public figures like Aganaga pushing him to choose one path, Bobi Wine might soon face a decision—focus on leadership or stay involved in the music conversations.
Only time will tell whether he listens or keeps doing both.
