“I’m Contesting Again Because Ugandans Asked Me To Stay” President Museveni Breaks His Silence On Why He Is Not Leaving Yet

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially confirmed that he will run in the 2026 elections. In his announcement, he said the decision to remain in politics was not only his, but also the wish of many Ugandans. According to him, millions of people across the country have been asking him to stay in office. They believe he still has more to offer, and they want him to continue leading Uganda. The popular slogan “Tova ku main,” which means “don’t leave the main line,” has become their way of urging him not to step aside.

Museveni shared two main reasons why he has chosen to remain in the race. First, he wants to keep working with the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), to continue improving the country. He mentioned six key areas of focus: maintaining peace and security, building better roads and electricity systems, creating jobs and wealth, offering better public services, and opening up more markets for Ugandans. He believes these areas are very important to help Uganda develop and compete with the rest of the world.

The second reason is his goal to grow Uganda’s economy and prepare future leaders. Museveni said Uganda is expected to reach a GDP of $66 billion by June 2026. But his vision goes far beyond that. He wants to help the country grow into a high middle-income economy, worth as much as $500 billion in the future. To achieve this, he believes Uganda needs strong, focused leadership—and he’s willing to guide that journey. He also wants to mentor the next generation of leaders who can keep the country on the right track.

Museveni says he isn’t running just to hold power, but to finish what he started and help Uganda move forward. While some people believe he has been in office for too long, others trust his leadership and believe that his experience is still needed, especially during times of economic change and global uncertainty.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 elections, the big question remains: will the people continue to place their trust in Museveni? One thing is clear—he believes he still has a role to play in building a stronger, more successful Uganda.
