Elections for the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees are not just another item on the national calendar they are a powerful opportunity for youth, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and older persons to be seen, heard, and represented. These elections give a voice to those whose needs are often overlooked, allowing them to influence decisions that affect their lives directly.
One of the main purposes of these elections is to choose members of the electoral college who will go on to elect representatives of the Youth, PWDs, and Older Persons in Parliament. This ensures that these groups have a direct line to national leaders who can speak up for their needs and priorities. But it doesn’t stop there.
The SIGs elections also help form electoral colleges that choose representatives at local government levels bringing the voice of special interest groups to the very communities where they live and work. From villages to cities, the elected leaders will represent and defend the rights of their groups.
These elections are held at three levels: the Parish or Ward level, the Sub-county or Town Council level (including Divisions and Municipalities), and the District or City Council level. This structure means that people from all corners of the country and from all backgrounds can participate in shaping decisions that touch their lives every day.
Beyond elections, SIGs Committees play a crucial role in monitoring and coordinating the implementation of policies and programs that directly benefit these groups. They make sure that government promises become actions—turning plans into real results for real people.
Another important task of the SIGs Committees is to work closely with the government. They act as a bridge between communities and leaders, sharing information about the challenges faced by youth, PWDs, and older persons. This helps the government plan better services, programs, and opportunities.
So, if you are part of any of these groups or care about inclusion, fairness, and good leadership, the SIGs elections matter to you. They are a chance to shape the future, make your voice heard, and hold leaders accountable.
Remember, your vote is your voice don’t let it go unheard.
