A major legal showdown is unfolding at the Supreme Court of Uganda as Hon. Francis Zaake confronts an appeal filed by the Attorney General on behalf of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. The appeal seeks to overturn a previous court ruling in Zaake’s favor.
Human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza announced on social media that Zaake’s legal team is fully prepared, comprising some of Uganda’s most respected legal heavyweights. The team includes Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, George Musisi, Isaac Ssemakadde, Male Mabirizi, Kato Tumusiime, and Julius Assekajjako.
“We are here to uphold the Constitution and defend the non-derogable right to a fair hearing and natural justice,” Kiiza affirmed, underlining their mission to protect Zaake’s constitutional rights.
The case has captured widespread national interest due to its high political stakes and broader constitutional implications.
Zaake was previously censured by Parliament amid a contentious fallout with Speaker Among. His lawyers contend that his right to a fair hearing was violated during the censure process. In contrast, the Attorney General argues that all procedures were lawfully followed.
Legal analysts suggest that the outcome could set a precedent for how Parliament disciplines its members and may redefine the boundary between internal parliamentary rules and constitutional guarantees.
With several top-tier lawyers involved, the case is expected to be both lengthy and fiercely contested.
