The German government has firmly rejected recent accusations from Ugandan officials targeting its ambassador to Uganda, Matthias Schauer, labeling the claims as “baseless” and lacking merit.
Over the weekend, Ugandan authorities alleged that Ambassador Schauer had interfered in the country’s internal affairs and engaged in conduct deemed inappropriate for a diplomat. In response, the German Embassy in Kampala issued a statement defending the ambassador, asserting that he has consistently upheld international diplomatic norms and responsibilities.
Germany reiterated its commitment to fostering a constructive and respectful bilateral relationship with Uganda, emphasizing principles of mutual respect, cooperation, and non-interference.
The accusations have raised diplomatic concerns, with international observers warning against escalating tensions and urging adherence to respectful diplomatic engagement.
This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny from some European nations over Uganda’s governance and human rights record—factors analysts believe may have contributed to the diplomatic strain.
Despite the current friction, Ambassador Schauer has previously maintained cordial relations with key Ugandan figures, including a notable 2021 meeting with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the President’s son, at the SFC Headquarters in Entebbe.
As speculation around the motive behind the allegations continues, analysts stress the importance of resolving disputes through diplomatic channels. So far, Ugandan authorities have not presented concrete evidence to support their claims leading many to view the accusations as politically driven.
Germany, meanwhile, is standing by its envoy and has called for a de-escalation of tensions and a renewed focus on diplomatic dialogue.
