In the early hours of Saturday morning, May 3, 2025, a fatal accident occurred at the Busabala Flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District, claiming the life of Mr. Rajiv Ruparelia, the only son of renowned businessman and property tycoon Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia.
According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the crash happened at approximately 1:54 AM. Rajiv was driving a Nissan GTR, a high-performance sports car, with registration number UAT 638L. He was traveling from Kajjansi heading toward Munyonyo when the incident occurred.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle collided with temporary pavement structures placed at the roundabout section of the flyover. After the impact, Rajiv reportedly lost control of the car. The powerful vehicle overturned and caught fire shortly after, leading to his instant death. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but it was too late to save him.
At the time of the report, the police had not yet determined the exact cause of the crash. Authorities confirmed that a full investigation is underway to understand the contributing factors, which could include road design, speed, or potential mechanical failure.
The accident has sent shockwaves throughout the country. Rajiv Ruparelia was not only the heir to one of Uganda’s most successful business empires but was also well known in his own right for his work in real estate, hospitality, and education. He served as a key figure in the Ruparelia Group and had gained recognition for his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to developing Uganda’s private sector.
In an official statement, SP Kananura Michael from the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety confirmed Rajiv’s death and extended condolences to his family. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased,” he said. “This is a tragic loss for the nation.”
The Ruparelia family has yet to release a public statement, but many Ugandans, public figures, and business leaders have already taken to social media to express their sorrow and support. Rajiv’s passing marks a devastating chapter in the life of one of Uganda’s most influential families.
