Mukono District is mourning after a tragic road accident claimed three lives and left ten others injured on the night of May 20, 2025. The accident occurred around 9:00 PM at Wantoni Junction along the busy Jinja Highway.

According to SP Kananura Michael, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the crash involved nine vehicles—four motor vehicles and five motorcycles—as well as several roadside food vendors.

The accident was caused by a Mitsubishi Fuso truck (registration number UBB 422U), whose driver reportedly lost control and veered into oncoming traffic at the junction. The truck crashed into several vehicles and motorcycles before hitting a food vending area crowded with people.

Three Toyota Hiace taxis (UBP 359W, UAW 042E, and UAQ 398L) were involved, along with five motorcycles: UFL 976T (Bajaj), UFN 916P (TVS), UEU 698W (Bajaj), UDK 495B (Bajaj), and UDZ 777A (Bajaj).

Three people died on the spot, including both pedestrians and riders. Ten others sustained injuries, some in critical condition. The injured included taxi passengers, boda boda riders, food vendors, and pedestrians. Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the wounded to Mukono General Hospital for treatment. The deceased were taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

The scene at Wantoni Junction was chaotic as police, medical personnel, and bystanders dealt with the aftermath. All involved vehicles were towed to the Mukono Police parking yard. Traffic investigators are currently examining the wreckage to determine the exact cause of the accident.

This incident has reignited public concern over road safety on Uganda’s major highways, especially in busy urban areas where trucks, taxis, motorcycles, and pedestrians all share the road. Authorities have called on drivers to exercise extra caution and promised a full investigation.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has pledged to keep the public informed as inquiries continue. Meanwhile, residents and victims’ families are urging for stricter traffic enforcement and improved safety measures at high-risk junctions like Wantoni.
