There are mixed reactions across the country after State House sources announced early Tuesday that the President will not address the nation on the situation of COVID-19 in Uganda.
The Presidential Press Secretary Don Wanyama downplayed the much-anticipated address saying “the Presidential address on Covid19 hadn’t been scheduled “
His clarification comes in the wake of a highly anticipated address that saw city traders under their umbrella KACITA plead with Mr. Museveni to avoid locking down the country or any part of it.
Widely, social media had announced a Presidential address that was expected to see Kampala metropolitan in another lockdown as cases of Corona infections continue to grow alongside rising deaths.
Smlnews talked to traders and motorists who seemed most worried to fall victims of a second lockdown.
However, there are voices from the public that believe the lockdown is necessary to save lives and the huge costs of testing and treatment that the Ministry of Health is undertaking.
Dr. Ruth Acheng has in recent weeks hyped her calls on the public to observe her Ministry’s guidelines on prevention and management of Covid19.
Among those opposed to the lockdown are politicians who are actively campaigning in many areas. Several of them have been accused of flouting public health guidelines.
Mr. Museveni faces a similar dilemma of a country now actively engaged in political activities and losing control and a situation of hurting many to save them.
Democratic Party’s Norbert Mao says government should be very careful about making a decision on another lockdown as the first one affected the population severely. Addressing the party’s weekly press conference today, Mao said government should come up with a clear strategy in fighting the pandemic.
To-date the overall infections stand at 2,426 and 25 deaths so far recorded with cumulative recoveries at 12,67.
