The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has taken a strong step toward improving airport safety by organizing a two-day workshop for airport security committees from Kisoro, Kasese, and Mbarara. The workshop was held from August 5th to 6th, 2025, at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara, and aimed at helping key stakeholders understand their roles in keeping Uganda’s regional airports safe and secure.
While officially opening the workshop, the Director of Airports and Aviation Security, Eng. Ayub Sooma, emphasized that aviation security remains one of the top priorities for the National Aviation Security Committee. He pointed out that protecting airports is not the work of one group alone—it requires teamwork.
“It is only through strong collaboration, cooperation, and meaningful engagement that we can achieve our goal of having a safe and efficient aviation system,” Eng. Sooma said. “Airport Security Committees continue to play an important role, and UCAA is proud to work with all airport stakeholders to ensure our airports remain secure.”
The event brought together district and city security leaders, along with heads of security agencies operating at the regional aerodromes. Their presence showed a shared commitment to improving aviation safety.
Mr. Sam Wonekha, the General Manager of Regional Airports, stressed the need to refresh and clarify the roles and duties of airport security committees. He noted that updating these responsibilities would help Uganda meet both international and national standards.
“Your feedback and active participation in this workshop are essential for us to make meaningful improvements,” he told the participants.
Ms. Jane Nakimu, the Manager for Aviation Security Facilitation, Policy and Regulation at UCAA, reminded the attendees that Uganda is fully committed to following international and national aviation security laws. She said the country aims to meet the required standards and recommended best practices in aviation security.
“By working together, sharing responsibility, and continuing our efforts, we can boost our ability to protect our skies,” Ms. Nakimu said.
The workshop highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, and continuous improvement in building a strong and secure aviation environment in Uganda. It marks another important milestone in UCAA’s journey to ensure the safety of both travelers and airport staff across the country.
