Deadly House Fire in Kawempe Claims Lives of Three Children, Leaves Family Hospitalized

On the morning of July 31, 2025, a devastating fire tore through a family home in Kirokole Zone, Kawempe Division, Kampala, leaving three children dead and three other family members hospitalized.

The fire broke out at around 11 a.m. in a single-room residence occupied by six people—four children and two adults. The household belongs to Ssenyonga Gerald, a boda boda rider who typically works night shifts. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but early reports suggest the family was cooking with a charcoal stove inside the room, which also housed a motorcycle.

Tragically, three young girls perished in the fire. Ssenyonga, his wife, and one surviving child sustained injuries and were rushed to Kirudu Hospital for emergency treatment.

Firefighters responded promptly and managed to contain the flames before they could spread to neighboring homes. Despite their efforts, the fire completely destroyed the family’s possessions.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after, gathering witness accounts and launching a full investigation. Forensic teams have collected samples from the site to determine what may have triggered the fire.

This tragic incident underscores the severe risks associated with indoor cooking, particularly in confined spaces where flammable items—like motorcycles—are stored. The local community is grieving the loss of the young lives and rallying support for the surviving family members as investigations continue.

Authorities urge the public to observe proper fire safety practices to prevent similar tragedies.
