Uganda 2025/2026 Elections!! Electoral Commission Gives Key Update on Nominations

The Electoral Commission has released an update on the ongoing nomination of candidates for Uganda’s 2025/2026 General Elections. This process, which started on September 3, 2025, is a crucial step in the election roadmap and covers Local Government Councils, Parliamentary, and soon, Presidential nominations.

According to the Commission, nominations for municipalities, city divisions, sub-counties, towns, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) will continue until September 24, 2025. Already, several candidates have been successfully nominated for different positions, including district chairpersons, councillors, and city leaders. The Commission congratulated all those cleared and urged them to get ready for the campaign season.

Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, noted that while some aspirants have complied with requirements, others have been unsuccessful due to failure to meet nomination standards. He reminded candidates to pay the non-refundable fees, present valid supporter signatures, and provide certified academic qualifications. Independent candidates, he added, must also register a symbol for use during the election.

The Commission further clarified that all complaints about the nomination process must be submitted in writing for formal handling. This, it said, will ensure grievances are addressed in line with the law instead of being circulated on social media. A Help Desk has been set up at the Commission headquarters in Wakiso to provide legal guidance, receive complaints, and share election information. Toll-free lines are also available for the public.

Attention is now turning to the nomination of Presidential candidates, scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2025, at the Commission headquarters in Kampala. Those aspiring for the presidency must be Ugandan citizens by birth, hold at least an A-Level qualification or its equivalent, and provide certified academic documents. In addition, they are required to present at least 100 registered supporters from not less than 98 districts, representing two-thirds of the country. The Commission has urged aspirants to submit these lists early, by September 10, to allow time for verification.

The Commission reminded all candidates that campaigns will follow nominations and will run until the elections scheduled for January and February 2026. It urged political actors and the public to maintain peace and avoid actions that could destabilize the country during this critical period.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Electoral Commission assured the nation that it will deliver free, fair, and transparent elections. Justice Byabakama called on political parties, organizations, independents, and citizens to work together in ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
