Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, made a significant visit to Juba, South Sudan, where he met with President Salva Kiir to discuss ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries. The meeting, held at State House, focused on enhancing bilateral relations and promoting peace in the region. Gen Kainerugaba arrived early in the morning and was welcomed at Juba International Airport by his South Sudanese counterpart.
Following a short reception, the General headed to State House for his meeting with President Kiir. Their talks highlighted the growing military and security partnership between Uganda and South Sudan. After the presidential meeting, Gen Kainerugaba visited the headquarters of Operation Mlinzi Wa Kimya (“Silent Guardian”), where he interacted with Ugandan troops and commanders involved in the peacekeeping mission.
Later, Gen Kainerugaba met with South Sudan’s Vice President to further discuss collaboration on security matters. These engagements underline the strong trust and cooperation developing between Kampala and Juba. Uganda has been a key player in supporting South Sudan’s peace efforts, especially through the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) following clashes between government troops and rebels. The UPDF’s presence has helped restore calm in the country.
President Kiir thanked Gen Kainerugaba and the UPDF for their important role in maintaining peace in South Sudan. Beyond security, South Sudan remains a vital trading partner for Uganda, with Juba being a major destination for Ugandan exports such as building materials and textiles.
As Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Kainerugaba reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening ties with South Sudan. This visit is part of a broader diplomatic effort by the General to build stronger regional partnerships. Recently, he held talks with Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa, supporting ongoing peace and stability initiatives across the continent.
Gen Kainerugaba’s visit to Juba highlights Uganda’s dedication to fostering peace and cooperation in the region, aiming for a safer and more prosperous East Africa.
