Uganda is preparing for a major transformation within its military ranks, as more than 20 senior generals of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are scheduled to retire in July 2027. This historic shift will mark the end of an era for many of the army’s most respected leaders and is expected to usher in a new generation of military leadership.
Among those set to retire is General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the former Chief of Defence Forces and current Minister of State for Trade. A highly respected figure in both the military and government, Gen. Mbadi is praised for his dedication, discipline, and strategic leadership throughout his career.
Also on the list is General Edward Katumba Wamala, a veteran commander who later transitioned into key civilian roles, including Minister of Works and Transport. His retirement will bring to a close a distinguished service in both uniform and public office.
The retirement roster features several other senior commanders who have played critical roles in shaping Uganda’s military structure. These include Lt. Gen. Charles Awany Otema, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, Maj. Gen. Godfrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, and Maj. Gen. Henry Ndarubweine Masiko.
Notably, Major Generals Apolo Kasiita Gowa, Leopold Kyanda, and Abel Kandiho are also set to step down, alongside numerous Brigadier Generals such as Edson Muhanguzi, Bekunda Besigye Cyrus, Winston Byaruhanga, and Stephen Tumwesigye.
The list extends further to include Brig. Gen. Tom Kikoyo Kabuye, Sam Omara, Fred Rugadya Akiiki, Mike Samuel Kisame, Patrick Mwesigye, Fred Mwesigye, Herbert Rwego Mbonye, and Simon Nicholas Ocan. Additional names include Metland K. Bitumbika, Cyil Mawa Muhindo, Charles Bakahumura, Charles Asiimwe, and Kahangire.
This planned mass retirement signals a significant generational shift in the UPDF and reflects the army’s ongoing efforts to modernize and professionalize its ranks. As these senior officers prepare to exit active service, they leave behind a legacy of loyalty, sacrifice, and contribution to national security.
The transition is expected to open the door for younger officers to rise through the ranks, bringing fresh perspectives and renewed energy to Uganda’s military leadership.
