Prof. Gilbert Bukenya Starts Tree Planting to Support Landslide Victims in Bunambutye, Bulambuli

On Wednesday, Biara Emmanuel Wepukhulu, who wants to become the Member of Parliament for Bulambuli County under the NRM party, welcomed former Vice President of Uganda, Professor Gilbert Bukenya, to his village home in Buyaga Town Council. The event brought together local leaders from Bulambuli and the Bugisu region to show unity in helping people affected by landslides and in protecting the environment.

One of the main activities of the day was a tree planting campaign held at the Bunambutye Resettlement Camp. This camp is home to many families who were moved from Bududa and Bulambuli after dangerous landslides destroyed their homes. The area is dry and needs environmental recovery, so planting trees will help improve the land, give shade, and support nature.

Children in the camp are already taking part in this effort. They have planted over 200 trees. But there are challenges. A 13-year-old girl, Ever Namataka, shared that, “Trees are withering and end up dying because all our fellow children residing in Phase II do not have readily available water.” Her words show the urgent need for water to help keep the young trees alive and healthy.

The event also showed the importance of partnerships. The Rotary Club gave relief items worth Shs100 million to help those affected by the landslides. The Welsh government also donated goods worth Shs49 million to support the families living in the resettlement area. These contributions are helping people rebuild their lives.

Another tree planting activity took place at Nabongo Secondary School, where Emmanuel Wepukhulu studied for his UCE exams. This action shows how engaging schools in environmental work can teach young people to take care of their surroundings and be part of positive change.

In the evening, Emmanuel hosted a dinner at his home. Supporters from the NRM party joined him to celebrate the successful day and to show their support for his efforts to help the community and care for the environment.

During the dinner, Professor Gilbert Bukenya publicly supported Emmanuel’s political journey. He spoke to a crowd of supporters and praised Emmanuel as a young leader with great ideas and dedication. He encouraged the people of Bulambuli to back him, saying Uganda needs leaders like him to move forward.

This public endorsement has given Emmanuel Wepukhulu a strong push in his campaign. His connection with respected national leaders like Professor Bukenya has brought attention to his work and built trust with the community. With this support, Emmanuel is now better placed to lead and bring real change to the people of Bulambuli.
