Today, Tuesday 17th June 2025, polling for the Village Committees of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is taking place across Uganda. Voting started at 9:00am and will go on until 4:00pm in villages throughout the country. This activity is part of the ongoing roadmap for the 2025/2026 General Elections.
This election gives Persons with Disabilities the chance to choose their own representatives at the village level. These committees play an important role in raising the voices of PWDs and ensuring their needs are considered in local decisions. It’s a powerful step towards inclusion and equal representation in the democratic process.
Only those listed on the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Register for Persons with Disabilities are allowed to vote in this exercise. Electoral officials have encouraged all eligible voters to take part and make their voices heard in their communities.
The Electoral Commission has emphasized that today’s vote is peaceful, well-organized, and part of a bigger national plan to involve all citizens—regardless of ability—in the country’s leadership processes. Local leaders and PWD advocates have praised the election as a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the role of disabled persons in shaping their future.
As Uganda moves forward with the 2025/2026 General Elections roadmap, today’s polling exercise marks another milestone in building a more inclusive democracy where every citizen, including those with disabilities, has a say in the governance of their community.
