Uganda is making significant progress in its preparations for the 2026 General Elections, following the relaunch of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) Roadmap in July 2024. Several critical activities have already been completed, laying the groundwork for a credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral process.
Speaking at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop under the themes #SIGsElectionsUG and #ECRoadmap2026, EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon outlined the Commission’s achievements to date.
Among the most notable accomplishments is the successful demarcation of electoral areas. This process ensures fair and balanced representation across the country, with constituencies realigned for better voter access. The EC has also reorganized polling stations to make voting more convenient and accessible for all citizens.
A major step toward inclusivity has been the mapping of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on the National Voters Register. This effort is aimed at ensuring their full participation in the electoral process. The Commission has also recruited temporary election officials who will be instrumental in supporting the voting operations.
Justice Byabakama confirmed that the EC has completed the General Update and Display of the National Voters Register, as well as the Registers for Special Interest Groups (SIGs). These updates are essential to maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the voter database.
Further information, including the full statement from the EC, is available on the Commission’s official website at ec.or.ug/node/774.
With these milestones achieved, Uganda is well-positioned for the next stages of the electoral process. Continued engagement from stakeholders and citizens will be crucial in ensuring free and fair elections in 2026.
