In a major diplomatic development, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the immediate suspension of all defence and military cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany. The decision follows what the UPDF describes as credible intelligence linking Germany’s Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mathias Schauer, to activities that threaten national security.
According to military sources, the Ambassador is accused of engaging with groups labeled as “hostile pseudo political-military forces” allegedly working to undermine the Ugandan government. Intelligence reports suggest that these groups are involved in covert efforts to destabilize the country through political and military means.
“The UPDF has, with immediate effect, suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” a senior army official confirmed.
The army says this suspension will remain in place until investigations into the Ambassador’s alleged actions are concluded. UPDF leadership expressed deep concern over what they see as a violation of diplomatic norms and interference in Uganda’s internal affairs.
Military cooperation between Uganda and Germany has in the past included training programs, logistical assistance, and information exchange. The abrupt halt in these engagements signals a serious shift in relations and is likely to trigger a wider diplomatic response.
Sources within the government indicate that discussions are expected between Ugandan and German officials in the coming days. Still, Uganda appears determined to protect its sovereignty and has taken a strong stance on what it calls unacceptable behavior by a foreign diplomat.
As of now, the German Embassy in Kampala has not released a statement regarding the allegations or the suspension. The situation continues to unfold, with more updates expected soon.
This move marks an unusual but assertive step by Uganda in addressing diplomatic concerns, particularly with a long-standing international partner like Germany.
