Breaking News!! UPDF Welcomes New Deputy Commander in Leadership Shake-Up

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has made important leadership changes. Brigadier General Fred Mwesigye has been appointed as the new Deputy Commander of the 1 Infantry Division. This change was officially announced on May 17, 2025.

Brig Gen Mwesigye replaces Colonel Wingston Mugarura, who had been serving in that role. At the same time, Brig Gen Mwesigye handed over his former position as Commander of Tokoora 1 Brigade to Lieutenant Colonel Jemba Ssejemba.

These changes were made during two official handover ceremonies earlier in the week. The events marked a new chapter in the UPDF’s leadership as the army continues to focus on professionalism and discipline.

Senior Commanders Show Support and Give Encouragement

Major General Stephen Mugerwa, the overall Commander of the 1 Infantry Division, led the ceremonies. He praised Brig Gen Mwesigye for his strong dedication, discipline, and excellent work. He also encouraged Lt Col Ssejemba, the new brigade commander, to follow the high standards set by those before him.

Colonel Mugarura, who stepped down as Deputy Commander, expressed deep appreciation for the support he received during his time in the role. He especially thanked Maj Gen Mugerwa, calling him a “memorable commander” who greatly helped shape his military career.

Many top officers from the division attended the handover events. Their presence showed how significant these changes are for the army and its leadership.

A New Chapter for the UPDF

These leadership changes show that the UPDF is serious about maintaining high standards and ensuring smooth transitions. The army is working hard to keep its leadership strong, skilled, and professional.

Bringing in experienced leaders like Brig Gen Mwesigye and Lt Col Ssejemba helps ensure the UPDF remains prepared and organized for the future. This reshuffle is not just about new titles—it’s about building a stronger, more reliable army for Uganda.

The UPDF continues to focus on discipline, leadership, and long-term stability. These recent changes are another step in that direction.
