Uganda Secures $600 Million Funding to Upgrade Kampala’s Infrastructure.

In a bid to address the chronic infrastructure challenges and poor waste management in Greater Kampala, Uganda has secured a $600 million funding package from the World Bank and French Development Agency (AFD). The funding will be launched by President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in Kiira Municipality.
Addressing Critical Infrastructure Needs.
The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Road Infrastructure Plan aims to tackle critical infrastructure development and waste management needs in the capital city. Kampala State Minister Kyofatogabye Kabuye emphasized that this significant investment will alleviate the city’s chronic underfunding and addresses pressing concerns raised by Ugandans regarding waste management and road conditions.

Funding Breakdown
The funding package consists of:
• $566 million (approximately UGX 2.1 trillion) from the World Bank, primarily in the form of credit
• $42.7 million (approximately UGX 162 billion) from AFD
Urgent Need for Improvement
The funding comes at a critical time, as Kampala has struggled with inadequate waste management and poor road conditions. A recent garbage landslide at a landfill site on the outskirts of Kampala resulted in the loss of at least 35 lives, highlighting the urgency of addressing these issues.
Expected Impact.
The funding is expected to make a significant impact on improving infrastructure and waste management in Kampala, enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting the city’s sustainable development.
Program Objectives.
The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Urban Development Program aims to:
• Improve institutional capacity in the GKMA for metropolitan coordination and management
• Increase access to improved infrastructure and services
The program focuses on five strategic objectives and major program areas, including:
• Competitive economic infrastructure
This funding marks a significant step towards addressing Kampala’s infrastructure challenges and improving the lives of its residents.
