Rebecca Cheptegei, a name that resonates with hope, resilience, and determination, leaves an indelible mark on Uganda’s athletic landscape. Though her life was cut short, her legacy will continue to inspire generations of athletes and fans alike.

Born on February 22, 1991 in Bukwo District in Uganda, Rebecca grew up with an innate passion for running. She began her athletic journey in school, where her natural talent and dedication quickly set her apart. As she rose through the ranks, Rebecca’s unwavering commitment to her craft earned her a reputation as one of Uganda’s most promising young athletes.

Rebecca began racing in 2010. According to her Olympic bio, she was a soldier and trained with Uganda People’s Defense Forces. Her breakthrough came when she brought home the Gold Medal in the 10000 metres run at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Thus triumph marked a historic moment for Uganda, as Rebecca became the first female athlete from her county to win a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal.

Rebecca’s medal haul also includes:

  •  Silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar
  • Bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, United Kingdom
  • Gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria
  • Silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2016 African Athletics Championships in Durban, South Africa

These medals not only showcase Rebecca’s exceptional athletic ability but also demonstrate her capacity to perform under pressure on the world’s biggest stages.

Rebecca’s success extends beyond her individual achievements, as she inspired a generation of Ugandan their dreams and strive for excellence.

Rebecca proudly represented Uganda at numerous global championships. She raced against her fellow athletes in the Olympic Marathon where she finished 44th. When she qualified for the Olympic, she set a new personal best of 2:22:47 at the Abu Dhabi Marathon in December 2022.

Previously she had finished fourth in the Half Marathon at 2022 African Games as well as finishing 14th place in the 2023 World Championship Marathon.

Before this, she finished in 14th place at the Marathon at the 2023 World Championships.

Lasting legacy

There is no better way to honor Rebecca Cheptegei’s legacy than to celebrate her unwavering dedication, unrelenting passion, and remarkable achievements in athletics. Through her impressive medal collection and countless records broken, Rebecca inspired a generation of athletes and left an indelible mark on Uganda’s sporting landscape. Her legacy extends far beyond her impressive resume, as she embodied the values of perseverance, resilience, and determination. Rebecca’s impact will continue to be felt, motivating aspiring athletes to chase their dreams and strive for excellence. She will forever be remembered as a trailblazer, a role model, and a shining star in the world of athletics.

Cheptegei’s life, though marked with success, was not without personal challenges. She was a mother of two and had recently separated from her husband in Uganda. Seeking a fresh start, she relocated to Trans Nzoia county, where she purchased land to be near the country’s many training centers and focused on her training.

Tragically, her life was cut short in a violent incident on September 1, 2024. She was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend and sustained life-threatening burns. Despite best efforts of medical staff, her organs failed due to severe injuries she sustained. Cheptegei passed away on September 5, 2024, at Moi Training and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya sorrounded by her loved ones.

Military Service

Beyond her accomplishments, Cheptegei was also a dedicated member of the Uganda People’s Defense Force, where she held the rank of Sergeant.

As a member of the UPDF Athletics Club, she represented Uganda in Military Sports events, earning a bronze medal in the 1500M race at the 2011 Rio de Janeiro.

Off the track

Rebecca was a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her humility, kindness, and generosity endeared her to fans and fellow athletes alike.
Rebecca’s passing has left a void in Uganda’s athletic community, but her memory continues to ignite the flames of passion and perseverance. Her story serves as a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and determination.

As we remember Rebecca Cheptegei, we honor her unwavering spirit, her remarkable achievements, and the indelible mark she left on Uganda’s athletic landscape. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

“The news of our daughter, Rebecca Cheptegei’s tragic death due to domestic violance is deeply disturbing” The First Lady of Uganda Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni tweeted yesterday.

“We mourn with you as a nation. Rest well champ” Maurice Mugisha replied to a tweet by Uganda Athlete’s Federation.
