The reduction of the riding permit fees for cyclists that was effected on August 1, 2024, has prompted the Taxi drivers to call upon government to put easily accessible and affordable avenues for vehicle drivers to acquire driving permits to reduce on road accidents in the country.

Muhammad Ssempijja supervisor and Driver in Namayiba Taxi Park has requested the government to avail the driving permits for free of charge by drivers to avoid being impounded by the police which at times cause accidents. He has added that drivers often rush in avoidance to get in contact with the traffic officers causing crushes on the road.

Ssempijja has advised boda boda riders to acquire permits since they are now affordable to enhance their confidence while on the road and fulfill the requirements that permit drivers and riders on the road.

He has applauded the commissioner Wilson Katushabe and the Ministry of Works and Transport on the quick address to the issues of the drivers when they complain.
“This is a unique move by the ministry, other institutions usually take long to address the grievances of people, but the ministry of works and transport especially on the issue of driving licenses have done a great job we appreciate.”

The acquisition of the learner’s driving license has been reduced from Ugshs 60,000 to Ugshs 40,000. A driving license valid for one year reduced from Ugshs 135,000 to Ugshs 100,000. A three-year license to cost Ugshs 130,000 from Ugshs 230,000, while a five-year license is reduced from Ugshs 330,000 to Ushs 250,000.
