Two people (a mother and her child) have died following last evening downpour in Kitswamba Subcounty Kasese district.
The two were swept away by River Hima yesterday at around 7:30 pm during the downpour.
“Last evening we got information from the community that a mother and her child had been swept away by river Hima during the heavy rain so our search and rescue team were joined by the police and the DISO to support the Community. By this morning, the rescue mission was successful and the bodies have been retrieved and taken by police.” Says Irene Nakasiita the Uganda Red Cross Society Spokesperson
Nakasiita says the deceased mother has been identified as Night Bbiira, aged between 35-40 years while the child is yet to be named.
She has appealed to the community especially those at risk to vacate the area since the rains are continous to avoid similar calamities in future.
“Those living nearby the river banks should also vacate because most of the people who are swept away by these rivers are normally people who are living closer to these water bodies.” Said Nakasiita
She added “We have been doing a sentisation campaign for the last three months although some people are not taking messages seriously, its high time that they responded because we are now continuing to lose lives”
