Police in Old Kampala have shot and killed a rape suspect as he resisted arrest and attempted to disarm officers, who were effecting an arrest.
The suspect is alleged to have raped a woman on Wednesday 21/10/2020 in Lugala, Rubaga Division, Kampala Capital City.
“The rape victim, whose name we will not disclose for privacy, narrated to the police her ordeal.” Says Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango
According to Onyango, the incident happened near a location where there are CCTV cameras and the detectives retrieved the footage and analysed it.
He says the suspect who was identified by the detectives using the CCTV footage was a private security guard at a garage near Kosovo junction.
“Today ( 22/10/2020) at around 05 30hrs police officers went to arrest him. However, he resisted arrest and attempted to disarm a police officer. The officers discharged warning shots, but the suspect went ahead and attempted to grab a gun from one of the officers. The officer’s colleague fired bullets that killed the suspect.” Explains Onyango
He says the scene has been visited by a team of detectives and the body of the deceased who has been identified as Ali Ambayo a resident of Lugala has been taken to the city mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem.
Onyango said the Officer who shot has been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Station as investigations continue.
“We appeal to members of the public to always cooperate with our officers while on duty and not to resist arrest any form.” He added.
