The Kawempe Division Mayor, Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjoji has halted the eviction of traders in Bwaise Market by Kabah Holdings – SMC Ltd.

The company, contracted to manage and develop Bwaise market on July 16 notified vendors in this market to vacate it before the last day of August to give way for its construction scheduled to last 3 months to take place.

This however according to Sserunjoji is inapropriate since it has no approval of the Division as well as not having given chance to the vendors as the sitting tenants to develop the market themselves.

“Any development project in Kawempe Division has to be evaluated and approved by the Division Planner and Town Clerk, which did not happen,” writes Sserunjoji to Holdings – SMC Ltd stopping plans to evict vendors.

“The sitting tenants were not given chance to develop their market, much as the land belongs to Rexbar Ltd Uganda,” adds Sserunjoji.

The People Power Coordinator, also known as Meeya Omukozi, says that the Katikkiro of Buganda received a petition letter from the Ow’omuluka Bwaise II on July 6 complaining about how the project is being handled and promised to give feedback after gathering all details into the matter. He says this is not yet to happen, thus, wondering what is causing the rush.

As such, Sserunjoji says, the project is put on hold until all formalities are met to the later.
