Members of Parliament from Kasese region have urged the government to allocate a special budget to address the recurring flood disasters in the area. This call comes after Saturday’s devastating floods that claimed two lives and displaced over 500 people from 17 villages.
The MPs, who were speaking during a press conference at Parliament, said that the situation has reached a crisis point and demanded immediate action from the government. “Enough is enough,” said Hon. Ferrigo Kambaale, MP Kasese Municipality. “We can’t continue to watch our people suffer year in, year out. The government must take responsibility and provide a lasting solution to this problem.”
The MPs are specifically calling for the government to allocate funds to drain the 25km stretch of the River Nyamwamba, which they say is the main cause of the flooding. They also want the government to implement measures to prevent soil erosion and protect the riverbanks.
“We have been talking about this issue for years, but nothing has been done,” said Hon. Arthur Waiko Mboizi”We need action, not words. Our people are suffering, and we can’t afford to wait any longer.”
The MPs have threatened to take the matter to the floor of Parliament if the government fails to respond to their demands. They have also called on the Minister of Water and Environment to come to Kasese and assess the situation.
The floods in Kasese have become an annual occurrence, causing destruction and displacement to thousands of people. The MPs say that it’s time for the government to take responsibility and find a lasting solution to the problem.
