Malaba Drivers Strike: Kenya Transport Association Calls For Urgent Intervention

Kenya Transport Association ( KTA) has asked the governments of Kenya and Uganda to immediately move to resolve the situation at the Malaba Boarder point where the traffic jam stands at more than 50 kilometers.

This is after truck drivers blocked the Uganda – Kenya boarder until their grievances are resolved.

The drivers say it takes them many days to cross the boarder since Uganda made testing of Covid-19 mandatory and more stringent.

These also complain of the general discrimination and harassment by Ugandan authorities at the boarder

Denis Ombok, the chief executive officer KTA says the current situation is unacceptable and is at a very dangerous health and safety risk.

He explains that there are many fuel tankers and other dangerous cargo in the traffic jam posing a risk to the community.

“The local population is getting agitated, the sanitary conditions are pathetic, drivers have no food and water and there is no social distancing or any measures to stop the spread of the virus” Ombok says in a press statement

Ombok also notes that interactions with the local community is ongoing meaning Covid-19 could be spreading at a higher rate.

The association is now asking the authorities to move in urgently to resolve the issue to avert a possible catastrophe.

Uganda recently kicked off mass testing of all long distance truck drivers at boarder points after the country registering many new covid-19 cases imported from neighboring East African countries.
