Uganda has been chosen to host the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) Global Conference in 2027, a major event expected to attract around 600 delegates from 132 countries. The announcement was made on behalf of the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, by Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, Deputy Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), during the 36th IFATCA Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting held from November 3–5, 2025, in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The prestigious bid to host the conference was secured at the IFATCA Global Conference held in Abu Dhabi in May 2025, positioning Uganda as a central player in global aviation discussions. The 2027 event is expected to highlight Uganda’s growing capabilities in air traffic management while providing a platform for sharing best practices, innovations, and strategies for safer skies.
Ms. Lumonya, speaking to delegates, emphasized that the theme of the upcoming conference, “Policy Leadership for a Safer Sky: Advancing Strategic Human Capital Development in Air Traffic Management,” underscores the crucial role of human expertise even as automation and technology advance in aviation. She noted that skilled professionals remain the backbone of a safe and efficient airspace system.
“In Uganda, we are committed to investing in our people through advanced training, upgrading air navigation systems, and promoting regional cooperation. Our goal is to enhance infrastructure, strengthen search and rescue operations, and build strong partnerships across the region,” Ms. Lumonya explained.
Gen. Katumba, who also serves as the Patron of the Uganda Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (UGATCA), has been instrumental in guiding the association’s growth. His leadership and experience in governance continue to inspire both current and future air traffic management professionals in the country.
For more than six decades, IFATCA has represented the interests of air traffic controllers worldwide, advocating for safety, professionalism, and international collaboration. The organization’s work ensures that air traffic management standards remain high, protecting the millions of passengers who travel by air every day.
The 2027 Kampala conference is not only a recognition of Uganda’s progress in aviation but also an opportunity for the nation to showcase its modern infrastructure, skilled workforce, and commitment to global safety standards. It will bring together regulators, air traffic controllers, researchers, and policy makers to discuss innovations in airspace management and the future of aviation safety.
Hosting such a high-profile event is expected to boost Uganda’s visibility as a regional aviation hub, attract investment, and provide valuable networking opportunities for local professionals. The conference will also spotlight Uganda’s hospitality sector, offering delegates a chance to experience the country’s rich culture and scenic attractions.
With careful planning and continued investment in training and technology, Uganda is well-positioned to deliver a world-class IFATCA Global Conference in 2027, strengthening its reputation in international aviation circles.
