In the peaceful village of Bumasifa in Sironko District, a young girl named Florence Nambozo Wamala began a humble journey that would eventually lead her to national leadership. Raised in a Christian family, Florence’s childhood was shaped by simplicity—helping in the family garden, singing in the church choir at Buhugu Cathedral, and attending Sunday services with her loved ones. Even then, her desire to serve others was evident.
Her father, Mzee Petero Wamala, instilled in her a strong foundation built on discipline, respect, and faith—values that would become central to her life and leadership. Later, she married Mr. Mayoga Henry, a fellow Sironko native, who shares her passion for community empowerment and public service.
Florence’s educational journey began in local village schools, where she faced the same hardships many rural children experience. Through determination and hard work, she overcame those challenges and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Kyambogo University in 2012. She went on to work as a teacher in various institutions, including the prestigious Aga Khan Education Centre in Kololo, Kampala. Her dedication to nurturing and guiding young people earned her respect and admiration across the education sector.
But Florence felt her impact could stretch further. She turned to politics with the aim of influencing policy and improving the lives of the people in Sironko. Her first attempt came in 2013 when she contested for the Sironko District Woman MP seat. Though unsuccessful, she remained determined. Two years later, in 2015, she returned—this time on the NRM ticket—and won, reclaiming the seat for the ruling party after a long opposition hold.
In 2021, after losing the NRM primaries, many assumed she would walk away from the race. But Florence showed resilience. She ran as an independent candidate, and once again, the people of Sironko placed their trust in her. Her victory was a clear sign of her strong grassroots support and unwavering dedication.
Her leadership journey took another significant leap in 2023 when she was appointed State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, replacing Hon. Agnes Nandutu. While the appointment caught some by surprise, many welcomed it as a reward for her commitment, loyalty, and increasing influence in national politics.
Despite her ministerial role, Florence remains deeply connected to her community. She continues to support girls’ education, provide school materials to needy families, and organize mentorship programs for the youth. Her work centers around women and youth empowerment, rural development, and creating opportunities for the underprivileged. She has become a role model for many young girls, especially in the Elgon region.
Her commitment to personal growth is equally inspiring. In 2023, she completed her Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Management at Uganda Christian University (UCU) and is now pursuing a PhD, proving that education is a lifelong pursuit.
Now seeking her third term in Parliament, Hon. Florence Nambozo Wamala is more than a public servant she is a mother, educator, mentor, and champion of transformation. Her story from the hills of Sironko to the corridors of national power is a testament to what faith, education, and perseverance can achieve.
