On Friday, May 23, 2025, Annet Nabirye was overwhelmingly elected as the new Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League for Luuka District, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s political landscape and reinforcing her growing momentum ahead of the 2026 Woman MP race.
Nabirye’s commanding victory is the latest in a string of political successes, most notably her earlier defeat of former Woman MP and ex-Minister Esther Mbayo at the parish-level NRM women’s structures. Once a political heavyweight in Luuka, Mbayo has seen her influence wane as Nabirye continues to rally grassroots support, particularly among young women.
A controversial decision by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi to exclude women under 35 from voting during the Lambala village elections a move interpreted as an attempt to weaken Nabirye’s youthful support, drew sharp criticism. The action not only sparked public outrage but also deepened resentment toward Mbayo, further boosting Nabirye’s popularity.
“The message from the people is loud and clear,” said a local political analyst. “The majority of voters in Luuka are young women, and efforts to silence them only energized support for Nabirye.”
Following her victory, Nabirye addressed enthusiastic supporters at the district NRM offices, promising to champion inclusive leadership, youth empowerment, and economic advancement for women.
“This win belongs to every woman and young person in Luuka who stands for fairness, development, and true representation,” she stated.
Analysts now view Nabirye as the leading contender for the 2026 Luuka Woman MP seat. Her strong grassroots backing, principled resistance to electoral manipulation, and deep connection with the youth position her as a formidable and rising political figure.
Outgoing Women’s League Chairperson Jane Mukoda congratulated Nabirye and urged all NRM women in the district to rally behind her leadership.
Annet Nabirye’s ascent symbolizes a broader generational shift within Luuka’s NRM ranks one fueled by grassroots activism, youthful enthusiasm, and a call for more inclusive and accountable governance.
