Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has made a provocative declaration that’s reverberating across the nation’s political landscape.
Speaking at a recent rally, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president announced his plans for a massive campaign targeting President Yoweri Museveni—financed, he claims, by the very system he aims to dismantle.
“I’m going to run the biggest and most expensive anti-Museveni campaign—and it will be funded by Museveni himself,” Bobi Wine declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The comment quickly gained traction on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), with many Ugandans calling it one of the sharpest political statements of the year. Supporters interpreted the remark as a jab at the government’s use of public funds—arguing that the regime’s own reliance on taxpayer money could ultimately contribute to its downfall.
“Museveni’s own system is fueling the frustration that will unseat him,” one user commented.
Bobi Wine’s critics, however, dismissed the statement as political grandstanding. Some accused him of focusing on rhetoric rather than offering tangible solutions, claiming he prioritizes media attention over meaningful policy proposals.
Despite the mixed reactions, Bobi Wine continues his countrywide mobilization ahead of the 2026 general elections. He’s urging Ugandans—especially the youth—to register to vote and resist authoritarian rule. As part of his outreach, he is meeting with local leaders, youth organizations, and survivors of past electoral violence.
His campaign comes amid rising demand for political change. President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, is expected to seek another term, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state. While he retains a loyal base, many Ugandans—particularly younger generations—are calling for new leadership.
Bobi Wine previously ran against Museveni in the disputed 2021 election, which was marred by allegations of widespread fraud, violence, and military interference. Since then, several NUP members have been arrested or reported missing, intensifying concerns about political repression.
Undeterred by these challenges, Bobi Wine says he remains resolute. His latest remarks signal a bold strategy: to turn the power of the regime against itself.
“We will not run. We will not hide. We will stand,” he told supporters, reaffirming his commitment to the struggle for change.
