Staff members at Makerere University are reportedly on edge after rumors surfaced about imminent arrests of some colleagues involved in organizing a strike. The Joint Staff Association had scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. today to vote on a motion to down tools, following the university’s failure to meet their demands for an enhanced pay package.
According to sources within the institution, staff were tipped off earlier in the day that security forces were preparing to disrupt the meeting. The looming strike is set to coincide with President Museveni’s visit to the university tomorrow, where he is expected to preside over a series of high-profile events. These include the installation of Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as Chancellor, the reopening of the refurbished Main Building and Lumumba Hall, as well as the inauguration of the new School of Law building.
It is believed that the staff had timed their protest to coincide with the president’s visit, potentially drawing more attention to their grievances. However, security forces, including the Special Forces Command (SFC), are reportedly on high alert and taking measures to prevent any disruptions.
“Strikes or unrest are being closely monitored, especially when the president is involved,” a source revealed, though the Nile Post has yet to obtain an official comment from the SFC regarding their movements at Makerere.
The atmosphere at the university remains tense, with staff casting furtive glances and tiptoeing around, uncertain of what the next hours will bring. All eyes are on the university as it prepares for both the presidential visit and potential staff unrest.
