In a move to ease transit during the ongoing repairs at Karuma Bridge, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the suspension of entry fees for vehicles transiting through Murchison Falls National Park during the ongoing repairs of Karuma Bridge. This fee waiver, effective for three months, applies to travelers using the Tangi-Bugungu gates via Bulisa Town Council and will last until December 31, 2024.
“We have waived the entry fees for transit vehicles to ease movement during the Karuma Bridge closure. However, those entering through the Kichumbanyobo gate for tourism purposes will still be required to pay the usual park fees,” UWA stated in a press release on Thursday.
Drivers are urged to use the Masindi Port ferry and other routes through Luweero-Nakasongola and Rwekunye, with the operating hours set between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
“Transit visitors will only be allowed into the park no later than 6:00 PM to ensure they exit by 7:00 PM,” UWA added.
Motorists are also reminded to observe a speed limit of 40 km/h, with strict penalties in place for violations. “Any speed above 40 km/h will attract a fine of 100,000 shillings. Littering, hooting, and accidental animal kills will also be penalized,” the statement warned.
Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, confirmed earlier this week that no traffic will be allowed over Karuma Bridge during the three-month repair period. “We are diverting all traffic through alternative routes, including the Luweero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa road,” he said.
