In a significant move to enhance bilateral cooperation, Uganda and Mozambique convened for the 2nd Session of the Uganda-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) in Kampala. The meeting, which began today, marks a pivotal step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations, building on a history of mutual support and collaboration.
Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warmly welcomed the Mozambican delegation to Uganda. In his opening remarks, Amb. Kabonero highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between the two countries. “Our two countries share strong historical bonds through the FRONASA and FRELIMO liberation struggles from the shackles of colonialism and bad governance in the post-colonial era, which is a strong foundation in enhancing our bilateral cooperation,” he stated.

The Uganda-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission was re-established in 1987, and the cooperation framework was signed in 2018 in Maputo. These agreements lay the groundwork for ongoing engagements and collaborations between the two nations. Amb. Kabonero noted the significance of recent high-level visits by the Presidents of both countries: “Their Excellences issued a number of Directives during the State Visit, and these are at the core of our deliberations for the next couple of days at this Second Session of the Uganda-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission.”
The meeting will focus on reviewing the progress made on Presidential Directives and discussing areas of cooperation under two sub-committees: Political and Security, and Economic. The goal is to conclude several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that will further strengthen bilateral ties.
Amb. Kabonero expressed optimism about the outcomes of the meeting: “It is my sincere hope that the senior officials present today will appreciate this strong historical bond and recent developments in the collaborative efforts to strengthen our bilateral cooperation and find common ground to conclude more bilateral agreements.” He emphasized that the enhanced bilateral ties would pave the way for significant economic and social advancement for both countries.

In a gesture of hospitality, Amb. Kabonero encouraged the Mozambican delegation to explore Uganda during their visit. “To our Mozambican brothers and sisters who are visiting Uganda for the first time, we hope that your stay and close interaction with Ugandans will give you a peak into Uganda’s hospitable soul and a clear insight of our aspirations, commitment and purpose. You can utilize the rest day of Wednesday 18th September 2024, to explore Uganda-The Pearl of Africa!”
The meeting is expected to foster a robust trade and investment relationship between Uganda and Mozambique, laying the foundation for future collaborations and mutual growth.
