After reopening its doors, China Town Supermarket in Lugogo has experienced a noticeable decline in customer traffic and a hike in prices, raising concerns among shoppers. Once famous for offering products at unbeatable prices, the supermarket is now struggling to maintain the large crowds that defined its early days.
“When China Town first opened, I bought a lot of things here because the prices were much lower than anywhere else,” said Jane, a regular customer. “But now, the prices have gone up, and some of the items I used to buy are out of stock. It’s not the same.”

Upon its initial launch, the supermarket attracted a flood of customers, eager to purchase everything from household items to electronics at significantly lower costs than other retailers in Kampala. However, after a closure by security officials, China Town has implemented several operational changes. Customers now enter through the back door and exit from the front, though the reason for this adjustment has not been made public.
“It’s strange having to enter from the back now,” remarked Michael, another shopper. “It feels like they’re hiding something. The excitement that used to be here is definitely gone.”
Shoppers are also noticing a steady increase in prices. “I used to love shopping here because I could save money, but the prices are now very close to what I find elsewhere in the city,” said Sarah, a disappointed customer. “It’s still convenient, but I no longer feel like I’m getting a bargain.”
As the supermarket adjusts to the changes, it remains uncertain whether it will recapture the attention and loyalty of its initial customers or settle into a new, quieter phase of operation.
